BANGALORE: How much does a kilometre of road of international standards cost in Bangalore? Rs 60 crore! One of the most ambitious infrastructure projects, the Inner Core Ring Road (ICCR) has been talked about for over two years.
When implementing agencies BDA and BBMP worked out the project details, they realised that each kilometre of the 30-km stretch would cost them Rs 60 crore.

Explain sources: "The project cost escalated after it was decided to make ICCR an elevated road. So an elevated road across 30 km will mean subsequent increase in costs. It is impossible to have surface road because there are 51 major junctions to be tackled."
The ICCR was designed in 2005 as a solution to clear traffic bottlenecks. The entire stretch is slated to be a sixlane signal-free elevated carriageway.
The project is fraught with obstacles ever since civic authorities started etching the blueprint. The initial plan was to widen the roads but then authorities realised it was impossible to widen a road like Avenue Road or the road in Jayanagar where Puttanna theatre is located. Only then was a decision taken to make it an elevated one.
Apart from the formidable costs, heres the other hitch at the identified 51 junctions, officials say, they were even contemplating having 50 underpasses!
It has now been brought down to underpasses at 13 junctions. ICCR, envisaged as access-controlled toll road, will now need an overall investment of Rs 1,800 crore.
